Look around you!

There are so many animals roaming about the streets in your neighbor after they've been kicked out for their illness, lost due to owners' negligence or suffered and escaped from the abuse from people.  Do you realize that the unspeakable animals are not even able to eat the food waste and starving to death while the food waste, which is worth of 8 trillion won, is thrown away every year?

Companion animals are born for the human needs.  No matter what they are - mixed breed dogs, stray dogs or stray cats, they are all the same animals that accompany
and give the abundant joy to human. It is not an exaggeration to say whether or not the societal willingness to protect animals and establish the social system to protect animals is the measure of how mature the culture of companion animals is in the society. 

We should put our best effort to protect the animals who were born for the human needs but are dying without getting any respect.  This is the right path for human to take.  And it is obvious
that the humanistic will to practice such thing takes an important role in making the respect for
life come true and making fine, righteous and sympathetic society as a result. The social system
to protect the animals of precious life in torture, abuse and negligence should be progressed to
the direction of perceiving them as a life with a right to live and respecting their right to live. 
And we should watch out the managing plan for abandonded animals which emphasizes only
the human-centered ways of thinking or managing.

The followings are the current status and the reasons of occurence of abandonded animals.

The change of the housing environment of human
Abandoning animals due to ignorance and negligence
Illness of animals
Aging of animals
The burden of medical expenses
Simply growing weary of the animals
Abandoning animals  due to the change of life style caused by marriage or pregnancy
Abandoning animals due to a blind faith for wrong superstition
Abandoning animals after their babyhood ended
The financial burden
Abandoning due to wrong medical knowlege

These reasons for abandonment are resulted by the excuses that absolutely cannot be
considered higher than the value of life.

These abandoned animals mostly die in a miserable way such as traffic accidents on the streets or being eaten by human. The Government hasn't prepared shelters or the managing plans for abandoned animals except  that the city of Seoul has placed the responsibility to manage abandoned animals in the animal rescuing and managing associations' charge. 

Only a small number of the animals that are protected by the animal rescuing and managing
associations are adopted, and the rest of them are euthanized.  Other cities except Seoul are
suspected to let dog-meat restaurants take abandoned dogs for their business and not enforce
euthanasia of the abandoned and unadopted dogs.  The private shelters that some individuals
altruistically run are too saturated.  So appropriate operation, medical support and brisk adoption
are way too short.

Then, what should we do?  How should we do?

We all need to be aware that abandoning animals is the inhumane act that cannnot be justified
in any case. We should totally change our perception to not tolerate the act of abandoning
animals .  Since every member of a society does not act according to the ethical standard,
a society has problems of criminals and their criminal acts in itself, therefore, the laws to control and solve the problems.  However, because animals cannot appeal or speak out for themselves for their minimum right to live based on the law (even though we set aside the fact that the law for this matter is lack in our society), we should establish the notion that abusing animals is as an inhumane act as abusing and neglecting children or aged people.

It is the reason of claiming that the most effective and reliable way for animal rights movement in
a long run is that every single of you should be the core of the animal rights movement and
endeavor to heighten the basic perception of animals' rights in our society.  The result of such
efforts could work as the pressure to the revision of the law.

What could be the most effective act that individuals with compassion can do for abandoned
animals?  It is that you either adopt an abandonded animal or partake the campaign of animal
rights movement to publisize the issue.

Adopting an abandonded animal as a companion animal is to save a precious life as well as become a driving force to fundamentally change our society.

If you adopt an abandonded animal around you and spread out continous efforts for the adoption
of abandonded animals, the fundamental changes on the important issues that the law cannot
control will be possible such as; Providing safe shelter to abused and abandonded animals Controlling indiscreet expansion of the pet industry Overcoming the wrong prejudice which discriminate animals based on their bloodlines or prefer young and little dogs over old dogs
Preventing the degradation of companion animals originated from abandoned animals Forming a league among protectors of companion animals Forming a culture of companion animals of a high grade


Abandoning animals is a criminal act of abandoning a life and unconscientious act of passing on one's responsibility to the others.
