Companion animal is a friend and a member of family
that can be living the whole life with human

 
* Companion animal

The relationship between man and animals began in the prehistoric age. The unique and peculiar role and position of pets (dogs) these days is formed by the necessity and the mutual dependence of man and dogs. It is different from the livestock for human' economy and one-sided necessity.  Dogs stayed with humans of their own accord and man gave them a special position and named them companion animals. 



* What does man mean to companion animals?             

Recent studies show that companion animals (especially dogs) are the only species that feel intimate with man and depend on man.

Actually, dogs have never been insufficient to live as friends or the members of family in man's history. They are so similar with man that they have been considered restrained by their own instinct by man, or they even have been considered as controlling their instinct and developing their instinct to fit their life to man's.

Dogs now cannot survive outside of man's society. To companion animals, man is the one that they can give their unconditional love and loyalty. Man means everything to companion animals.



* Accepting companion animals as a part of culture is a necessary demand coming from man's moral conscience.

Companion animals are members of the family and friends of man for their whole life. They are friends for children and good companions to talk with for lonely and old people who are living in empty houses. 

Moreover, they guide and help the handicapped. They also help the police and soldiers to search and rescue people in danger. They do so much good work for man that we cannot even measure how much.

That is why we shouldn't simply say that the relationship between man and companion animals is just one-sided or that animals are only being used.  

We have to consider and treat companion animals and their great contribution to humans ethnically as their understanding and faithfulness are very precious gifts and beneficial to man.

Animals are not only man's liking, but they are living things that feel scared and tremble with fear. They are born according to man's demands. So man (the owner of the animals) should be responsible for them. And this is the least ethical morality that is asked of man's conscience.  That's why man should first and firmly establish laws to protect animals and their rights. 




* Please be responsible for your pets if you have them.

 When you take them in as your family members, be sure that you can take full responsibility for them and provide for their needs. 

But what is most important than any other thing is your attitude for taking care of your own pet. Take care of them and give them back as much love as you get from them as their owner- even when they get sick or very old.

We should remember to take some basic countermeasures such as getting them name tags in case you lose them and vasectomies. Vasectomies are legislated to make owners responsible for their pets in many developed countries. And people in Korea are trying to legislate registering their pet to the government in case they throw them away.  But the law has limitations since animals are not able to voice and claim their rights. 

Legislating strong and reliable laws to protect companion animals shows your love for animals and will to enforce this.  And please remember to prepare some basic countermeasures: etiquette such as putting shoulder string to clean the defecation, inoculating and giving them parasitic ides in case your loving companion animals bother your neighbors. It will promote the position of companion animals.
